Game Angling & Fisheries News, Announcements, Upcoming Events/Notices & Reports: (Salmon & Trout Fishing)

Dated Wednesday June 15th, 2005

Photo: 12lbs 6ozs caught in Goreport bay on Lough Sheelin by Peter Donoghue of Edgeworthstown Co. Longford on a fly tied by Joe Kenna, It took almost 2 hours to land the huge fish which was witnessed by Phil Donoghue, brother of Peter.

HUGE  SPECIMEN TROUT LANDED ON LOUGH SHEELIN ON FLY BY CO LONGFORD ANGLER

The Mayfly season is all but over now for 2005. There was a good fall of gnat on Sheelin with a few trout feeding and this is likely to continue for a few days to come. We now look forward to the peak sedge season and in particular the Green Peter season expected to commence in a few weeks time. Meanwhile as expected fishing goes into a lull period on many of our lake fisheries with perch fry dominating the trout menu. The highlight of this weeks report was a specimen trout of over 12lbs caught in Goreport Bay Lough Sheelin by a Co Longford angler. A few other large trout were encountered on the gnat.   TIGHT LINES!

LOUGH ENNELL

Angling is slower than of late with lesser hatches of buzzer and button evident. The odd few trout are still being caught on buzzer during late evening.  Paddy Kenaghan, Ballycumber had a fish of 1.75lbs. Mick Clarke Dysart had a fish of 4lbs on buzzer. Dave Mc Bride Dublin had a fish 4.25lbs also on buzzer. Perch fry is now on the trout menu and this marks a period where fishing traditionally gets quiet for a couple of weeks in advance of the peak sedge season.

LOUGH GLORE....

Next Sunday 19th June Lough Glore anglers will host the Connie's Bar & Lounge open trout competition. Fishing is from 9am-6pm.  The lake has being heavily stocked with quality brown trout by Lough Glore angling club and it's expected a good day will be had by all.

LOUGH DERRAVARAGH....

On Saturday night last the Delamere cup was fished. Unfortunately no trout were caught on the night. It was a beautiful evening but as the Sun disappeared the wind got up it got very cold which effected the fishing. This competition will be fished again later in the season. The Derravaragh Anglers are in action again next Sunday. Its the annual family day out with prizes for junior and senior anglers. Fishing is from 2pm-6pm start and finish Donore shore. Congratulations to Derravaragh angler Peter Donough who captured a fish of a life time last week on Lough Sheelin, Peter was fly-fishing late into the night when a Monster trout weighing 12lbs 6oz grabbed his Murrough Fly.

The May fly season has come to an end and now anglers are going to Lough Corrib as the hatches are a bit later on this lake. Over all the fly fishing on Lough Derg was again better than the preceding year and the largest fish I have heard about caught on the fly was by local angler Jimmy Hanly with a fine fish of 8lbs. 5ozs.
