GRILSE SLOWLY ARRIVING
IN THE LOWER SHANNON AND CASTLECONNELL SALMON FISHERY
Overall trout fishing remains quiet
with the exception of Lough O'Flynn which has been lively. The
Peter hatch is just starting on our midland lakes and heralds
the commencement of another Green Peter season and an important
angling milestone in the game angling calendar. It will take a
little time for the Peter hatch to build up sufficiently to get
the trout interested and bring on a proper take. This is
likely to occur over the next two weeks which will hopefully
provide good sport into August.
Salmon fishing has been slow so far on the
Shannon. At time of writing grilse are starting to filter into
the lower Shannon and the Castleconnell Salmon beats in better
numbers - lets hope the run builds up sufficiently to provide
good sport in the coming weeks. TIGHT
LINES!

ANGLING IRELAND 2005: Why not give fishing a try?
A series of one day angling sessions led by experts will be held
throughout Ireland during the summer of 2005. Each session will run
from 11am to 4pm. Each session will begin with a talk on safety, the
environment, and good waterside manners. It will concentrate on
instruction in specific types of angling appropriate for each
particular location - sea, coarse, game.
After lunch (which can be purchased at most locations or bring your
own) there will be an opportunity to get hands on experience with
rods, tackle etc. and weather permitting demonstrations / fishing on
suitable waters.
There is no charge for instruction and numbers are limited on a
first come / first served basis. Booking form is available at the

ANGLERS ASSISTANCE REQUIRED IN OTTER AND MINK
SURVEY CONDUCTED BY THE WILDLIFE ECOLOGY GROUP TRINITY COLLEGE
DUBLIN: The wildlife ecology group
of Trinity College Dublin are using dead otters and mink to study
the dynamics of Irish otter and mink populations. If you see an
otter or mink note its location and/or pick up the body and keep it
cool (preferably in deep freeze). They will then arrange to collect
it from you and are extremely grateful for all help. Contact
