GOOD PETER HATCHES ATTRACTS MORE ANGLERS TO OUR MIDLAND LOUGHS

The Green Peter season is slowly starting to hot up on our Midland lakes, lets hope we're in for a few weeks of lively sport. Some excellent trout fishing has been reported from Mount Dalton and Michael Flanagan Angling Correspondent keeps us up to date on this and other news from the Midlands. We feature the story of the Great Fur Covered Trout Myth. For those interested the World Cup Trout fly-Fishing championship finals will be fished on Lough Mask from Cushlough, Ballinrobe, Co Mayo over the August holiday weekend. Salmon fishing is generally quiet with only a handful of fish reported following a recent small spate.   TIGHT LINES!

MOUNT DALTON....

Some excellent trout are being caught on Mount Dalton at the moment. This 9-hectares lake near the Village of Rathconrath is definitely one of the jewels of the Midland lakes. There are two boats which can be hired locally and you are advised to book well in advance (No engines allowed). The lake holds a good head of trout some of which were stocked as fingerlings and thrived on the natural feeding. These fish along with regular stocking of quality brown trout by the ShRFB ensure some super fishing for us lucky anglers. Last week Sinclair Walker (Freightmore House) Castlepollard had a very enjoyable evening on Mount Dalton. The best of the fishing was just before dark on dry sedges. This lake is fly-only check it out for yourself Gibson-Brabson (Boat Hire) 044-55102.

WORLD CUP....

Over the August weekend the World Cup Trout fly-Fishing championships will be fished on Lough Mask from Cushlough, Ballinrobe, Co Mayo. The qualifying days are Thursday 28th -Sunday 31st July with the final on Bank Holiday Monday 1st August, we would like to take this opportunity to wish  all Midland anglers who are taking part the best of luck over the weekend. I will be fishing on Saturday so hopefully I will meet up with some local anglers on the day. We are told there is over five hundred anglers competing in this years World Cup. The World cup was first fished for way back in 1953 and taking a quick look at the Role of Honour. We had only one local angler who won the World Cup that was C.W.Gibson, Derravaragh Co. Westmeath. There is a fantastic array of prizes waiting to be won which includes two boats, three boat engines along with loads of fishing tackle and gear + there are prizes for the winners from each qualifying day sponsored by local Business in Ballinrobe. Some of the main rules during the World cup are as follows, Lifejackets are a legal Requirement and must be worn at all times, only traditional Wet Fly & Dry Fly angling allowed, with no Proxy anglers allowed. All trout must measure 12" Nose to fork of tail, with any angler bringing in undersize trout liable to prosecution. Electronic fishfinders may not be used and competitors should not stand while fishing.

Lough Glore anglers are in action on Sunday 31st August on the day the AMD & Print Open competition will be fished please contact Castlepollard Fishing  Centre for details 044-61852.

Finally-"Get-Stuffed". Local anglers are well known for telling the odd tale or two when it comes to fishing related stories, mind you we have a long way to go to match this one. "The Great Fur-Covered Trout Myth". (see pic).
