The Salmon fishing season kicked off on February 1st on a number of fisheries in the lower Shannon Region. We received no news of any fresh run salmon caught yet.  The Irish Trout Fly Fishing Association AGM took place in the Greville Arms Hotel  on Sunday 6th February.  Michael Flanagan (Angling Correspondent) fills us in on the news. Now that we are starting a new angling year, we ask anglers to consider your own safety while boating or fishing on lake or river. Please logon to the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources website dedicated to water safety at  http://www.safetyonthewater.ie We have published our angling roundup in respect of Salmon Fishing for the past year, the trout fishing annual report will feature next week. I.T.F.F.A. AGM....

I.T.F.F.A.  The Irish Trout Fly-Fishing Association held their annual general meeting last Sunday in the Greville Arms Hotel Mullingar, their was a  good turn out of delegates from the 91 affiliated members. Also it was good to see the Dr. Billy Waldron back in action after his operation. The meeting itself went very smoothly, some of the main talking points were that it would be great if a major sponsor would step in and support the Irish Senior and Youths International Teams. There are some super anglers competing at local level but when they qualify to fish for their country, some find it very hard to afford the costs due to work and travel. There was some talk on the Lough Owel Angling Centre, it is hoped that when it is finally completed it will be possible for the I.T.F.F.A  youths to use it as a training centre etc. On the subject of youths, the 2005 National Youths Qualifier will be fished on April 2nd on Lough Bane. All clubs are encouraged to get as many as possible of their young anglers to fish this Fly-Fishing  qualifier. Finally the I.T.F.F.A.  Officers for the coming season are as follows. President-Stan Mc Cart, Vice-President Jackie McMahon, Chairman-P.J. Hallinan, Hon Treasurer-Ian Rowand, P.R.O.- P. Deery, Hon-Secretary Michael Callaghan, Youth Officer David Brown. and the Senior team coach is Stan Mc Cart. On taking up his position of President Stan McCart presented Dr Billy Waldron with his past President Medal (See pic).

SALMON MEETINGS....

Working with the Sunday World as angling correspondent I receive a lot of news from around the country, and I always said I would keep you up to date with what's happening elsewhere in the Angling World. Next Wednesday evening at 8pm the Eastern Salmon Federation (Branch of stop salmon drifts nets now) will hold a open meeting in the Ashbourne House Hotel Ashbourne Co Meath. "Agenda". A presentation of the advice on the management of the salmon resource will be given by Dr Niall O Maoileidigh from the Marine Institute and will explain the policy and methodology used by them in arriving at this advice. The case for the cessation of drift netting will be presented by Mr Bob Weymes and Mr V. Duigan of the stop now campaign. A lot of locals travel and fish for salmon so this info might be of some use to you.
