SALMON ANGLING STEPS UP A GEAR FOLLOWING A FEW SMALL SPATES ON THE RIVER FEALE

It was a mixed week weatherwise, rain, dry spells and mostly pleasant temperatures which is set  to continue for another few days. Trout fishing is starting to pick up as we head into September. Lough Ree features positively in our angling news column with good trout fishing competition results reported by the Athlone Anglers Association. Quality rather than quantity was reported from Lough Ennell with trout of over 5lbs winning the Lough Ennell Perpetual Cup. Salmon angling stepped up a gear following a few small flash floods on the River Feale and Mulcair rivers. We have announced a change in the salmon rod bag limit applicable  from September 1st, 2005. See our main report for details of this and other news. Prospects look good for the coming week with more mixed weather on the way. TIGHT LINES!

EVERY CLOUD HAS A SILVER LINING....

Yes that certainly was the case for Nass angler John Keogh while he was competing in the Lough Ennell Perpetual Cup last Sunday. John hooked up with a cracking wild brown trout weighing 5.25lbs to win the Cup. In second place was Ennell expert Mick Devanney from Mullingar,. Mick boated two super fish the best weighing 3.46lbs, third place went to Dave McBryde of Southside Angling in Dublin and 4th place was another local angler Johnny Murray. As is the norm with Lough Ennell not many trout were caught during the Lough Ennell Perpetual Cup but as you can see from the winning photo the quality is second to none. Fishing was from 11am-7pm and conditions were very good for fly-fishing with a nice breeze and plenty of cloud cover. Most anglers met fish during the day, but catching them is another days work. In the first few hours of the competition I surely met 6-8 trout drifting out from Dysart Island, but I could not interest them in taking my flies. Another sight for sore eyes was the number of very big trout pitching along the front of Dysart right down to the Burrow Hill. This was like something you see coming near the end of the season when the trout are getting ready to run the rivers to spawn. All in all it was a very enjoyable day on Ennell and the next competition will be on Sunday 18th September when we will compete for the O'Malley Cup. Fishing is from 11am-7pm weigh-in Whitebridge Bay.

CLONHUGH CUP....

The angling season is closing in very fast with just six weeks left on some of our local waters, and on Sunday next 4th September Lough Owel Trout Preservation Association will hold their last official trout competition for 2005. On the day the Clonhugh Cup will be fished, also up for grabs the same day is the Tommy McCormack Cup for the angler with the heaviest gross weight of trout during Lough Owel Trout Preservation Association competitions. Fishing is from 11am-7pm with weigh-in at Mullallys . The lake is producing some good quality stocked trout at the moment and last week I teamed up with my good friend Terry McGeehan and his son Ben, Terry is well known Journalist with the Irish Daly Star. The lads were on a few days break here in the Midlands which they really enjoyed along with the crack here in the town. Terry went home with a lot of local history about Lough Ennell & Owel thanks to Anthony Hughes of Hughes Corner House Bar & Lounge.

THE WYKES/GAFFEY MEMORIAL CUP....

The Wykes/Gaffey Memorial Cup was fished on Sunday 28th August and with a strong South Westerly wind whipping across Lough Ree conditions were ideal for fishing even if things got a little bumpy in the boats at times. The weigh in took place that evening in 41’s Pub and the competition for places was tight with a lot of fish around the two pound mark but it was Leo Behan and Richie Gabbet who were head and shoulders above the rest when their fish weighed in at 2lb 15ozs. Second place went to Thomas Killian and guest fisherman, Brian McDermott all the way from Carrick on Shannon, when their trout weighed in at 2lb 5ozs. Two ounces further back in third place was Tony Doolan and Gerard Lynch who fish weighed 2lb 3ozs and only one ounce behind them was Noel Monaghan with a trout weighing 2lb 2ozs. Fifth place went to father and son duo Paddy and Alan McEvilly with a trout weighing 1lb 14ozs.

Our sincere thanks to the Wykes and Gaffey families who sponsor this competition and to everybody at 41’s for their excellent hospitality at the weigh in and presentation of prizes that evening.

KENEAVY MEMORIAL CUP....

This competition will take place on Sunday 4th September and will start from Gallagher’s Boat Shed at 10.30pm. This will be the second last trout competition this year and a big turnout is expected as the season draws to a close. The Captain of the Day will be Pat Rohan and the weigh in and presentation of prizes will take place that evening in Potter’s Bar in Irishtown.

GREYHOUND RACING....

A fantastic night was had by all last Saturday at the Greyhound Racing in Mullingar and a big thank you to the hard working social committee for arranging this event. There was plenty of winners on the night but it was Angela Sloane and Eamon Cunningham who were the big winners as not only did they have seven of the eleven winners on the night but they also won the top prize in the raffle which was three nights B&B and two evening meals in the Quality Hotel in Clonakilty Co. Cork which was kindly sponsored by Super Value.

FOR YOUR DIARY....

The following is the schedule of competitions that it is proposed to hold over the next few weeks. Please note this list may change due to unforeseen circumstances, however the details of each competition will be published here, on the posters and on the Athlone.ie website in the week prior to each competition.
