FISHING ROUNDUP 2005 SEASON

The early part of the season was
hampered by wintry weather, nonetheless some good fishing was
reported from time to time. The Mayfly season was one of the main
angling milestones and 2005 was a good year on the big lakes. While
weather didn't always oblige there was excellent mayfly fishing on
Lough Ree which has seen a huge recovery in recent years, best
methods were dapping and dry fly. Lough Derg fished well also when
weather obliged. Buzzer fishing was successful for some on the
Midland lakes around Mullingar and on Sheelin. Olives were also on
the trout menu from time to time and provided some evening sport.
The Peter season was next on the calendar and was a bit slow to
start but did pick up on Lough Owel for the Patti Doolan Shield
competition in August. After a lull a few end of season competitions
did produce fish. Lets reflect on
the past season month by month and see who caught what and where.

It was a very cold but dry opening week of the trout
fishing season. Early March felt more like January than the start of
March. Not surprisingly there wasn't as much angling activity due to
the harsh condition. Those who ventured out had limited success
especially on Lough Owel. Athlone anglers managed a few trout to 5lbs
in a local competition on Lough Ree.

fish caught on the day and a number of other fish were hooked and lost. Pat Mc Caul

In April catch returns were down on most trout waters mainly
due to the difficult angling conditions, particularly early on in April.
While there was some slight improvement, weather did continue to
hamper angling on our midland lake fisheries. One of
the highlights was a 13.5lb brown trout caught on Lough Ree in a
local trout fishing competition fished by the Newtowncashel anglers.
Weather gradually warmed as the month advanced. The first mayfly of
the season was observed on Lough Ree and Derg towards the end of
April with a couple of trout reported caught on Derg on dry Greenfly
.

May started with unsettled weather. There were
good hatches of Olives on most Midland lakes with trout showing
some interest. The Mayfly started hatching early on in May and there
was very lively fishing reported in patches on the southern
shores of Lough Derg at Mountshannon, Garrykennedy and Killaloe. Pallas
Lake in Co Offaly featured prominently in our angling news
column at this time. By mid month Mayfly fever had set in. Dry greenfly and dapping accounted for some cracking
trout up to 7lbs and 8lbs on Derg and on Lough Ree.
Fishing on our Midland lakes was fruitful by mid month with quality trout caught on
Olives and evening buzzer fishing on Ennell.
Weather proved difficult for periods, which hampered the Mayfly
fishing, especially the evening gnat fishing. During the more
suitable interludes there was lively action reported on Lough
Derg and Ree. Good evening buzzer fishing on our Midland
lakes continued with quality trout caught of 4lbs and 5lbs
reported. The cold air
temperatures hampered evening gnat fishing on Derg. Still some
great fish were landed on suitable evenings. An angler from Whitegate had a
superb fish of nearly 8lbs on the gnat. Mayfly
fishing was excellent on Lough Ree. Over 200 trout were
officially returned by pleasure anglers dapping and Mayfly on
Lough Ree in one week during the latter half of May. Fish
averaged 2lbs to 5lbs and other larger trout were encountered to
over 7lbs. Lough Ennell was also in form with good evening
buzzer action reported. Lough Sheelin produced some cracking
trout on the Buzzer with the gnat also accounting for a few
large Sheelin trout as May bowed out.

The very poor weather hampered trout angling for most
of the opening days of June with high winds, rain and thunderstorm
activity. During the more suitable conditions some quality fish were
landed on Ennell, Sheelin and Lough Ree and a gradual improvement was
evident on Lough Owel which had a bad season up to then. Some cracking
trout were caught on Lough Sheelin. One of the highlights was a
specimen trout of over 12lbs caught in Goreport Bay by a
Co Longford angler. A few other large trout were encountered on the
gnat, shame the weather played havoc as there were trout moving to the
big hatches of button on Ennell. The Island River on the River Suck
produced plenty of trout to the mayfly. The Mayfly season eventually
petered out about the 10th June and what a season was had
with our larger lakes such as Lough Ree and Lough Derg
providing superb sport when weather allowed.
Perch fry
explosions followed on our Midlands lakes traditionally marking a
period in the angling year when fishing normally goes into a lull
period. June 2005 was no exception with trout angling remaining quiet
from mid month onwards. Lough O’Flynn did start to hot up after a non
eventful mayfly season and anglers had good results to wetflies
mainly during late evening sessions. Some quality trout reported caught on sedges as June closed. The Nenagh river was
reported as fishing well.

Overall trout fishing remained quiet in July with the
exception of Lough O'Flynn which fished well to wet flies early on in
the month. The Peter hatch proved sporadic and contrary to
expectations didn’t provide consistent sport even though there were ideal
late evening conditions with sultry warm nights during the hot spell
of weather mid month. A few anglers fishing on Ennell did have some
success with cracking fish landed to over 6lbs. One of the
highlights in June was a 13.5lb brown trout caught by a Pike angler
near Killaloe on Lough Derg. We had reports from angling correspondent
Michael Flanagan of good returns from Mount Dalton lake near
Mullingar.

Fisheries Awareness week 2005
The Peter season kicked off on a positive note on
Lough Owel in the opening weeks of August with anglers reporting
quality fish up to 6lbs. There was good fishing reported in the Patti
Doolan Memorial Shield competition. While some cracking trout were
caught on Ennell the Green Peter season proved patchy overall with
only sporadic good hatches of fly. At the other end of the region we received reports of good evening
fly fishing on the River Maigue and tributaries. There was a lull
period in the latter half of August. There was a recovery as the month bowed out with Lough Ree featuring in our angling
news column once again. The Athlone Anglers Association reported good
fishing in their local competition. Quality rather than
quantity was the comment in the case of Lough Ennell with a trout of
over 5lbs winning the Lough Ennell Perpetual Cup competition.

Trout fishing was mixed in September. There was good results
reported in the Kineavy Cup trout competition on Lough Ree and
very good fishing was had in the Clonhugh Cup competition fished
on Lough Owel. Ennell produced a few fish early on in September.
Weather was pleasantly warm. During mid month trout fishing tended
to be patchy in the Midland lakes with the exception of Lough Owel,
which continued to fish well. Good trout fishing was had on the
Mulcair and River Maigue catchments and on the River Deel at
Newscastlewest. Co Limerick The Ormond Anglers Association Nenagh reported
excellent sport in their annual Juvenile Competition. Fishing
started to hot up on our Midland Mullingar lakes as the season
advanced. The Halligan Cup trout competition fished on Lough Ree
provided good sport. September bowed out with weather taking on a
distinct autumnal feel with lots of rain and wind in the final
week.

The season wound up on October 12th End
of season competitions on Owel, Ennell and Sheelin did provide some
sport in what was otherwise a quiet end to the game-angling season.
This was mainly due to very windy weather over the final days. 30 trout were caught in the end of season McDonald Cup
competition on Sheelin. Lough Ennell produced quality trout if not
quantity while Owel provided most of the action with plenty of fish
caught in the final competition of the season.
