It was quite a good trout angling year overall in 2004. Weather did
hamper angling at times. The big lakes Lough Derg and Lough Ree
fished very well again during the mayfly season with some
exceptional activity reported from Lough Ree. Lough Owel had a good
year with consistently good fishing reported and Ennell produced
some cracking trout when it came out of slumber at various times
during the season, especially in October. Other fisheries performed
well also. Lets see how each month fared over the 2004 season.
February was very cold with stiff northerly winds and local snow
falls. The
only catch returns we received in February were of two trout of 3lbs landed on the
River Fergus system by two local anglers, one a junior.

Most fisheries opened on March 1st and the opening week returned
some good trout on our midland fisheries in the opening days in some
nice spring weather. However this was short lived with the arrival
of storm force winds accompanied by driving rain going into the
second week. Gales, rain, hail, electrical storms were the order mid month which resulted
from a very unstable weather system over Ireland. These atrocious
conditions curtailed many sporting activities and events with
angling proving no exception, particularly so on our midland lakes
which forced cancellation of competitions. Rivers were in high
dirty flood and un-fishable over a couple of weeks. The month closed
on a more benign note with a return to spring-like conditions again. Fishing too
picked up in response with Lough Owel reported as coming alive at times.

April
was by and large a difficult month for trout anglers with lots of
wind, squally showers of hail and extended spells of rain towards the latter half of the month.
"Good fishing on Good Friday" was
the headline of our report for our midland lakes over Easter. Angling
Correspondent Michael Flanagan reported brisk fishing.
Lough
Glore angling club hosted the Meadow Hall construction sponsored
Trout competition on Easter Sunday 11th April. Many anglers had their
4 trout bag limit.
Ennell produced a few cracking wild fish at this time also. One of the
highlights of the month was a specimen wild brown caught of 12.25lbs
caught on Lough Graney Co Clare by Shaun O’Callaghan secretary of Lough Graney
Anglers. News came in toward the end of the month that the Mayfly
season had commenced on Lough Derg with activity reported off Youghal
Bay.

The Mayfly season got underway on Lough Derg early on in
May but
unfortunately stormy weather over the latter days of April and into
early days of May upset angling. Conditions did improve somewhat and so too
did the mayfly fishing
with superb action reported on Lough Derg when conditions were
favourable, Luska Bay on the eastern shores and Mountshannon and
Killaloe on the western shores all reported plenty of angling activity
and good returns. The midland lakes in Mullingar and Sheelin
started to hot up with buzzers on the trout menu and quality fish were
caught by mid month.
An unbelievable rise of fish was reported in the height of the Mayfly
season on
Lough Ree with local Athlone anglers getting exceptional fishing for a
few days,
the best for years.
Some great fish came off Lough Ennell and whopping trout were caught on spent gnat on
Lough Sheelin as the weather warmed up later in the month.

The Mayfly season extended into early- mid June. It
was one of the best seasons for quite some years on some fisheries.
There was a good fall of gnat on Lough Ree with many lovely wild fish
caught by local Athlone anglers. Our midland lakes Sheelin and Ennell
produced several cracking trout to 8.5lbs to anglers evening fishing
the spent gnat and later on the sedges with the Murrough proving very
effective on Sheelin. The sedge season commenced early on Sheelin with
some fine trout caught. One whopping specimen wild trout 12lbs was
recorded on the lake mid June. Pallas Lake in Co Offaly and Lough
Glore featured in our angling notes at this time with very good sedge
fishing there. Traditionally our lake fisheries go into a lull
period into June in advance of the sedge season, which is another
milestone in the trout angling calendar. Trout went on Perch fry for a
few weeks and hence the rest of June was rather a quiet affair.

Trout fishing was quiet during the start of July but
picked up well mid month on Pallas Lake with an abundance of fish
caught to various sedges. The Peter season was slow to commence and it
was the end of July before there was any decent hatches or action. But
all was about to change .
Our
Midland Fisheries awaken as the Peter season gets into full swing.
This was
the headline on our initial report for August with Lough Owel coming
into its own over the following weeks. The Patti Doolan Shield
competition was testament to this with a number of anglers getting
wild fish to over 5lbs. Ennell overall was very disappointing despite
good conditions and excellent fly hatches. Sheelin also had good fly
hatches mainly sedges with a good rise of fish reported. The downside
was lack of anglers. Pallas returned some quality fish to mainly
local anglers on a range of flies. On
O’Flynn fishing was very lively with prolific hatches of sedge
evident. Fish were reported as readily feeding in the evenings.
At the other end of the region on the Shannon near O’Briensbridge
a specimen trout hit the news headlines caught by a Belgian angler
pike fishing. As the month advanced the Peter season started to
taper off but Owel continued to provide good fishing to sedges and
dapping the Daddy and grasshoppers commenced. O’Flynn continued to
fish well also in the evenings with more fish coming to the Daddy as
the month closed. The Croneen run on the Camcor and Little Brosna
rivers was quite good but fish were generally difficult to catch.

Trout
fishing was generally good in September. Lough Owel continued to fish up to the
last week of the month and was certainly one of the regions hotspots
overall. There wasn’t a lot of angling reported from Lough Sheelin and
hence limited feedback received. Ennell which remained in summer
slumber suddenly awakened mid month with some exceptional trout
fishing reported for those who put the effort in. There were also good
catches reported in local
competitions. Lough Ree was in the angling notes with a number of good
trout caught by pleasure anglers wet fly fishing and dapping the
daddy. Good catches were also reported in local competitions, one a
fund raiser by the Athlone AC for the local hatchery on Lough Ree.

The trout fishing season bowed out on a high note.
It was a good finale particularly on Lough Ennell
with some beautiful wild fish caught by pleasure anglers. Anglerts
also did well in the local competitions. To win the Ennell
competitions anglers had to land fish of over 4lbs, some pleasure
anglers had trout to over 5lbs - so all in all it was a good end of
season result here. The end of another good season on Owel were the
comments of many anglers who had fished the lake through the season
and even though weather conditions were not ideal many anglers had
good sport. One or two anglers reported losing good fish at the net,
but were happy that these fish would survive another year. On
Sunday 10th October, the Derravaragh anglers held
their end of season Trout competition. Anglers reported meeting good
numbers of Trout, but alas fish proved elusive. On the day well known
Multyfarnham angler Liam Gilsenan came out top rod with a great
Derravaragh Trout weighing 5lbs 8oz. This is a super fish from this
fishery.
