FISHERY DESCRIPTION: The Island River is a tributary of the River
Suck and rises near Ballinlough in Co Roscommon and flows eastwards to
join the Suck at Ballymoe. It is a limestone water and holds fair
stocks of wild brown trout ranging in weight from 0.5lbs to
1.5lbs, but averaging a little over 0.5lbs. It is generally a sluggish
river but does have some fast flowing sections suitable for trout
fishing. Good stretches are from
Island Bridge, past the Mill of Clough. From the Mill of Clough to
Buchalla Bridge is a noted stretch for the dry fly angler. Another
good stretch is located near the confluence at Ballymoe. It is
regarded as an early season river as it tends to weed up in high
summer. Best methods are spinning and worm very early in the season
and as the water warms up from early April onwards fly is productive.
Fly hatches are typical of any limestone water and has some hatch of
Mayfly. Early season flies include March Brown, Hares Ear and
Greenwells Glory. After May time many stretches become difficult
to fish due to excessive weed growth. Our advice therefore is confine
your fishing up to May.
