ESTABLISHMENT OF INLAND FISHERIES IRELAND - SEE PRESS RELEASE DATED JULY 1st, 2010

OPEN SEASON: March 15th  - September 30th, (Ref: Shannon Fisheries Region Lough Derg (Conservation of Trout) Bye-Law No. 754. 1999).

SPECIES: Wild Brown Trout averaging 0.75lb (Limited run of Croneen Lake Trout from Lough Derg averaging close to 1.5lb, best early season.

SIZE LIMIT: 10 inches Ref: Bye Law No: 817, 2007.

This Bye-law prescribes the minimum size of trout at 35 cm which may be taken from Lough Derg south or downstream of the bridge at Portumna and prohibits angling for trout during the period 1 October each year to 14 March in the next following year.  The Bye-law also provides for a minimum size of trout at 25 cm which may be taken in the waters of the tributaries of Lough Derg and incorporates the provisions of the Limerick District Bye-law Nos. 614, 1980 and 488, 1954.

DAILY BAG LIMIT: Not Applicable.

ANGLING METHODS: All legal methods.

ACCESS: Access is good at all road bridges.

FACILITIES: Open Bank - banks can be difficult in places - please observe country code.

PERMISSION TO FISH: No Permit is required.

FISHERY DESCRIPTION : This fishery a tributary of Lough Derg located south of Portumna. It can be a  productive trout fishery best  in the spring time of the year March to May. It has generally long slow moving stretches, more suited to worm fishing or wet fly fishing when there is a breeze.
