Pike Angling Update

dated Wednesday June 16th, 2010

Photo: Guest of Kevin Lyons, Melview Lodge.

GOOD PIKE FISHING REPORTED DESPITE THE SUNNY WEATHER AND SHRINKING WATER LEVELS

The Pike fishing in the upper Shannon area has been very good, Pike to over 20lbs have been showing over the past few weeks and let's hope it continues. Angling guests of Kevin Lyons had plenty of action, they fished two venues and managed 113 Pike to 19lbs in six day's using lures. On Saturday 5th of June Boyle and District anglers fished the Martin Michell Perpetual Memorial Cup Pike Competition, in beautiful sunny conditions on Lough Key. While the day was not really suitable for angling, all the 26 anglers that took part enjoyed the day relaxing in the sunshine. At Shannonbridge four anglers from England contacted local Gillie Aidan Kelly to bring them pike fishing on the 11th and 13th June, they had some good fishing, Dermot Killeen reports. Last Sunday saw the first of the downriver Pike competitions held by Athlone Anglers Association. First up was for the Poyntonia Cup , which attracted a great turn out. See their schedule of up-coming summer Pike competitions. The “Brendan Grace Pike competition hosted by Saint Flannan’s Angling Club in Killaloe was held on Sunday last. The winner was Dan Sullivan with a 21lbs pike. Weather is to remain fine and sunny for the coming days, water levels are dropping fast and presently very low. This may affect the fishing. TIGHT LINES!

REPORT DATED JUNE 4th, 2010:

The pike are still active in some of our lakes here and fight really hard right now. Italian anglers Guido and Stefano had some good action during the week with a lot of small and some nice medium size pike. A few of the bigger variety hit the lures really hard too, but didn't connect right. But I guess they'll be there for again. As we will be out most days during the week we will update this again soon.

The Pike fishing in the upper Shannon area has been very good, Pike to over 20lbs have been showing over the past few weeks and let's hope it continues. Both lures and dead baits have proved successful.

Cor and brother Hans along with friends Geert and Ton from Holland did well while fishing with Kevin Lyons of Melview Lodge. They fished two venues they managed 113 Pike to 19lbs in six day's using lures. Kevin commented that these guys were very experienced Pike anglers and this showed when they had to fish in some very hot and bright conditions and still managed to land some great fish. All Kevin had to do was  guide and show them the venues.

SEAN AND PATRICK WIN POYNTONIA CUP ...

Last Sunday saw the first of our downriver Pike competitions, for the Poyntonia Cup, take place and there was a great turnout with twenty eight boats taking part. With the day being overcast with plenty of prolonged showers hopes were high for a good days fishing and while plenty were caught there were only two in double figures and it was the pike of Sean Berry and Patrick Sherlock caught early in the day which was to hold out and win the day.

The presentation of prizes took place that evening in McNeill’s Bar where as usual Arlene was an excellent hostess and the anglers were made feel very welcome. As mentioned already it was Sean Berry and Patrick Sherlock who topped the leader board with a fine river pike weighing 15lb 6ozs. Second place went to Eamon Cunningham and Angela Sloane for their Pike which weighed 11lb 1oz while third place went to Dominic and Helen Conway for their pike of 9lb 15ozs. Conor Hannon along with his son Cathal and John Naughton were awarded fourth place when their pike tipped the scales at 8lb 8ozs and the fifth and final prize went to Paul Maher for his 7lb 8oz pike.

Our thanks to Arlene McNeill not only for the excellent hospitality but for the very generous sponsorship of this competition which is probably the oldest competition in the club having first being fished for back in 1937 which was the first year the club was formed.

Shannonbridge Fishing Report to June 16th, 2010...

River level is still hovering just over the 2.1metre level.

B and J Pech fished from a boat on June 11th in fair weather using dead bait, caught 20 pike in the 2lbs to 5lbs range. Four anglers from England contacted local Gillie Aidan Kelly to bring them pike fishing on the 11th and 13th June. Aidan used two lake boats with light engines and a friend for the task. The first day they had a combined catch of 18 pike and some 20 big Perch. Aidan figured that the spoons used were too small and attracted the Perch. On the second day they had a total of 21 pike. Bait used were dead bait and spoons. All fish were returned safely to the Shannon. Aidan found it very weedy in some deep water. Aidan Kelly can be contacted at 087-7497024 if you require the services of a Ghillie. Both days fair weather.
