SHANNON REGION FEATURES REMARKABLY
WELL IN THE ISFC 2009 PIKE AWARDS
We welcome you back to angling in 2010 and hope you
have a successful year. We open the new season with a big freeze which
has gone on since before Christmas and hence little to report. The Irish Specimen Fish Committee
has published their 2009 report since our last update. We report that
the Shannon Region did remarkably well in the specimen Pike awards. Lough Key produced the only
Lake caught Pike at 13.81kg, which measured 46.8cm. 22 River
caught Pike were verified by the committee in 2009, 19 of these were
caught on the River Shannon, River Suck and River Inny, all of these
waters in the
Shannon Region. Back to the present, well very little going on with
treacherous conditions for driving and bitterly cold
temperatures not enticing Pike anglers to get out and about over the
opening few days of the season.
This cold snap is forecast to continue to the weekend at least. TIGHT
LINES FOR 2010.

GLORY DAYS ON THE WAY BACK ON LOUGH GLORE
Yes I ventured out to Tullaghan Angling centre last week, and met with some of
the Lough Glore Anglers. It's certainly full steam ahead for the coming 2010
angling season and the anglers are straight into action on January 2nd with a
pike competition. The club will hold a committee meeting on January 10th, and
those elected are expected to attend. Plans are underway to make access to Glore
easier for boats, and Dermot Broughan of the ShRFB stated that he and his fellow
Fishery officers will meet with the club members and help out in whatever way
they can on the problem with access, and weed control on the Glore River. Also
this week Lough Owel Anglers finished with their fly tying classes, once again
it was a successful few weeks, and some deadly flies are flying around at the
moment. The water levels are settling a little as we speak, and I have seen a
drop on the Brosna River this week. I took a trip across to Aishling Coarse and
Game Angling Centre in Edenderry and crossed quite a few rivers on my travels,
plus the Grand Canal. They are quite fishable and are worth checking out. While
in Aishling I met some of the Daingan Coarse Angling Club members as they fished
a match in bitter cold conditions. The trout lake is producing cracking trout,
and in my short time I hooked and landed 5 hard fighting fish. Mind you the
water temperature was freezing, and my hands went numb as I released the fish.
Next Sunday North Longford Anglers will hold an open boat pike competition;
hopefully the water on Gowna will drop a little for this Christmas cracker.
