Pike Angling Update

dated Wednesday January 20th, 2010

PIKE FISHING BADLY HIT BY THE BIG FREEZE  OF PAST WEEKS

The early season winter pike anglers be it pleasure or competition anglers have been hit very hard with the recent hard spell of weather which saw temperatures plummet to as low as -12 C leading to lakes and margins of some rivers and canals left frozen solid. Thankfully at time of writing there is a big thaw and fishing should get back to some normality very soon. Meanwhile some waters are out of order for fishing, either still frozen or due to local flood conditions from the considerable melt water off the hills. This applies to the River Suck system as we write which is in high flood and out of order for fishing presently. Brian Bohan managed to brave the freeze up over the past number of weeks and reported a few good pike for his Hungarian angling guest who recorded his personal best Pike in the Upper Shannon. Well done! Angling correspondent,  Michael Flanagan reports on Pike fishing news in the Midlands. Fishing in the Mullingar area was also hard hit due to the sub zero temperatures and frozen conditions. We'll have more news in two weeks time.  TIGHT LINES FOR 2010.

Brian Bohan   CHAFLYNNS COTTAGE & GUIDING SERVICE  MOHILL reports on angling in the upper Shannon region around MOHILL and CARRICK ON SHANNON

After what seems a life time of frost, snow, ice and very low temperatures things seem to be getting back to normal. Lakes are still frozen but are starting to thaw out. The rivers were about the only places that were fishable. I spent most of the freeze on the Shannon which was hard going at times with bits hard come by.  Zultan Nagygyorgy from Hungary who now lives in Maynooth had a few nice pike on two of his trips with me and was overjoyed with his personal best fish.

WINTER PIKING HIT HARD

The early season winter pike anglers be it pleasure or competition anglers have been hit very hard with our recent hard spell of weather. I spent a few hours last weekend on the Inny and it was very cold. Even though I caught no fish their was surface activity of some sort, what species of fish I don’t know, but hopefully in the coming weeks I will get back on the River. The Black River, which flows into the Inny just down River of Lough Iron, also took a hit with the icy conditions, and I was surprised to see stretches of this river frozen. Over the years some nice pike to 5-6 lbs come from this River and I got some great Perch on certain stretches.

PIKE AS A SPORTING FISH

While on the subject of pike I flicked through a few action shots I took of pike and they are some fish when on the end of a line. Now many serious fly anglers are targeting this species of fish. My preferred method is trolling or spinning, also wobbling dead baits is deadly when the pike are on the feed. Some of the hits are arm wrenching, and even a small pike will test the best of anglers. Nowadays the pike angler is well catered for, years back it was your old reliable Copper and Silver Spoon trolled on a rod like an E.S.B. pole compared to modern rods. The next time you have an hour to spare drop into your local tackle dealer and check out the pike gear. Every month you pick up an angling magazine there is a huge array of new lures. Ok some at designed to catch us anglers but some really do the business.

GLORE FROZEN OVER

I was speaking to Glore Anglers Chairman Eddie O'Donnell last week and the lake is completely frozen over. Eddie and some club officers were busy working on the river, and he told me it will be at least 2-3 weeks before they have a date for the first pike competition.

THAT’S IT

I am still waiting for the hard copy of the I.S.F.C. report, when we receive it we will feature some of the specimen catches from our Midland Waterways. In the mean time check out the ShRFB for record catches from the Shannon Region. February Irish Angler is out on the shelves. The Murtagh Cup and Sean Wear Cup fished on Derravaragh over the winter months are featured, plus some glossy pics of Conor Murtagh and Una Weir of Multyfarnham presenting the Cups.

ShRFB reports for the RIVER SUCK VALLEY - Mid River Suck

Last weekend there was a big thaw on the River Suck and snow melt water has risen the water levels by several feet on the system. At time of writing the River, Lough Loung, Stoneham's and other local lakes are in flood and out of order for fishing, water levels are above the fishing stands on the lakes. Levels should gradually settle over the coming week.
