Pike Angling Update

dated Wednesday February 3rd, 2010

Photo: 15lb 8oz Pike caught by Ritchie Dunne in January 18th on a lake near Roosky, making it his 1st double of 2010! The fish fell to a popped up Mackerel tail. A quick photo was taken and the fish released back to the depths. All other runs that day were on Mackerel tail.

Brian Bohan   CHAFLYNNS COTTAGE & GUIDING SERVICE  MOHILL reports on angling in the upper Shannon region around MOHILL and CARRICK ON SHANNON

Weather has settled down somewhat of late but heavy rain is expected before the weekend which may colour the rivers and most of the lakes in the upper Shannon area. However, they are fishable at the moment. I've being back on the lakes and rivers over the last week or two with some nice fish showing. I got out two days in a row and fished a small river in Roscommon with some good results over the two days with a total of seven fish landed. Weights were 5lbs, 9lbs, 11lbs 4oz, 14lb 8 oz, 18lb 12ozs and 20 lb 2oz and on the second day I landed a very nice fish that was very well feed and tipped the scales at 25lbs 14ozs.

ShRFB reports for the RIVER SUCK VALLEY - Mid River Suck

Water levels are gradually coming back to normal for the time of year, and starting to recede from the callow land as we write.  There was some fishing in the mid River Suck but fishing was slow with only one 10lb Pike caught. Other than that there's not much to report but fishing should improve, assuming we don't get too much rain in the coming weeks.

Further local info contact Mr John Ryan, Assistant Fisheries Inspector Tel: 094 96 40103 Mob: 087 2536064 and  John Devaney, Assistant Fisheries Inspector, Roscommon for the lower River Suck  087 2266735.

This has been little reported activity on on Lough Ree or the Lower Inny. However, levels are back to normal as we write and in good order for fishing.

GLORE ANGLERS KICK START COMPETITIONS FOR 2010.

Glore anglers kick off the competition scene here in the Midlands with their first pike competition of 2010. It was certainly tough but a very enjoyable day on a cold frosty Glore. This Sunday February 7th we pike anglers hope to travel to Gualladoo Lake for the big Carrigallen open boat pike competition with a first prize of €1,000. That will sort out Valentines weekend. Anyway more important business takes place that weekend when the Ireland Angling 2010 Show takes place in the National Show Centre near Swords Co. Dublin. It's a Mecca weekend for anglers and we hope to catch a few Midlanders on camera at this years show. Sadly this week we lost one of our treasured angling characters here in Mullingar with the death of Peter Connelly. I knew Peter from an early age as he served in Columb Barracks with my Dad. I will miss chatting to him about our fishing and shooting adventures.

GLORE PIKE COMPETITION

Last Sunday we woke up to very frosty conditions and a light blanket of snow. The type of morning you just look out, and roll over in the bed. Not for us hardy anglers, grill on, boil the kettle for a flask, check all is packed and gear up for another days fishing. Our first competition here in the Midlands took place last Sunday on Glore in bitter cold conditions. On the day only 4 pike were caught and I did manage to catch the 4th fish but like myself was a bit small. However I did hit two more pike while spinning and it could have being a different story if one of these pike held on. You know yourself the one that got away. I was not the only angler with a fishy tale that day as Mark Bardon competition captain fishing with Anthony Scally lost a good fish right at the boat. Anthony did manage a fish on the day and took 2nd place. Joe O' Donnell took 3rd spot, and Colm Potterton from Kildalkey Co Meath took top rod on the day. Glore anglers will hold a committee meeting on February 10th and on the night competition dates and rules will be arranged. Club membership is open at €20 for senior anglers, and if you are interested in coming on line with Glore Anglers contact Chairman Eddie O' Donnell. Mob: 087-7761970.

DAY OUT AT THE PIKE

This Sunday February 7th my angling pals in Carrigallen will host their open boat pike competition on Galladoo Lake. This is a very popular venue for Mullingar anglers and a good turn out of anglers is expected on the day. Once again top cash prizes are up for grabs with €1,000 for heaviest pike, €500 2nd, and €250 for 3rd. plus optional pool prize money, and mystery prize, which I won last year. Fishing is from 10-30 till 4pm. It's going to be a fantastic day out weather permitting and if you need more info please contact Thomas Tierney on Mob: 086-2902778.

ANGLING SHOW DIARY DATES

Jack Charlton will officially open the 2010 Ireland Angling Show at the National Show Centre Swords Co Dublin. It's going to be an action packed weekend for anglers with demonstrations from some of the worlds top anglers. Fly anglers are in for a real treat with fly tying demonstrations taking place each day. Matt Hayes presenter of Total Fishing will also be knocking around to give you sound advice on catching your record-breaking fish. It is on on Saturday and Sunday February 13th and 14th. We hope to make it on Saturday as on Monday 15th February the trout season opens on some of our Western Lakes and we will be on the Corrib.

PETER CONNELLY R.I.P.

Sadly as the years pass by in the Angling World here in the Midlands we lose some great characters. Last week we lost one such character in Peter Connelly. Peter was a very keen angler and shooter and really loved the outdoor life. He was a top class pike and sea angler and will be greatly missed by his fellow anglers. Peter retired some years back from the Defence Forces here in Columb Barracks where he served with my father John. I got to know Peter young in life and in recent years we had some great chats about angling in years gone by. I will certainly miss talking to Peter about our passion in life, and his first few words he spoke every time we met. How is old Johnny and the Ma. On behalf of Angling Focus we send our deepest sympathy to the Connelly family, and all Peters friends.

THAT’S IT. ...

Soon we will be gearing up for March 1st for the trout season on our Midland lakes. It’s hard to believe January 2010 is done and dusted. Tight lines till next week.
