DETAILS OF THE LOUGH REE PIKE
ANGLING FESTIVAL ANNOUNCED
Water levels have dropped significantly and fishable
almost everywhere now, but it's very chilly and uncomfortable out of
doors. Mick Flanagan was out and about in the midlands and captured
some nice photos of catches on Lough Derravaragh, including the
feature photo this week. Dave Houghton of Active Irish Angling announces the
details of the new Lough Ree Pike Angling Festival. This a new event
and anglers
will have
a chance to share in a staggering cash prize fund that could total
over €40,000. See main report for details. Following correspondence
from anglers, the Board at their recent Board meeting decided to amend
the one rod rule to permit two rods for Coarse and Pike angling on our
mixed stock fisheries in the Midland Fisheries Group of waters. The
one rod rule continues to apply to trout angling waters in this group.
Details are below. We hope the weather will get a little milder and
hope to have lots of action to report in two weeks time. Finally, The
Board will be present at the Hooked Live Show in Citywest next
weekend, we hope to meet you there.

Season starting!
After what was (and partly still is) an
unusually cold winter, we finally managed to get out and boat the
first few pike of the year. No monsters as yet, but at least some
double figures. A half days fishing yesterday yielded 7 pike on
lures with two of them over the 10lbs. mark. and three more just
below it. Not too bad considering it's still pretty cold and the
water temp currently is only at 3.9 degree Celsius. Although this
looks to drop again during the week as another cold spell with sharp
frost is promised.
Anyway the season is started and we are optimistic that soon lots
more action will follow.

Oisin Mac Aodhagain from Dublin
reports on a recent fishing trip on the Shannon at Portumna
"I fished the Portumna area on the 18th
and 19th of February. I had initially planned on starting some early
coarse fishing however after a day without a nibble I stopped. I put
it down to the recent very cold weather. From here I went spinning
and dead-baiting for pike. I sat for two days trying several
dead-baits such as Roach, Smelt and Mackerel. No luck what-so-ever.
It is important to note that I fished the hot-spots in Portumna and
still no luck. Very disappointing but its just more experience.
There were no anglers about the area at all. Water levels are still
high but the difference can be seen between a few weeks ago, give it
3 more weeks and it should be back to normal please god.

PIKE ANGLING ON LOUGH DERRAVARAGH...
This week anglers enjoyed some good fishing. Lough Ree produced a few nice pike
for Johnny Corcoran early in the week and it won’t be long before we are gearing
up for the Lough Ree Pike Festival in April 2010. Mark Keane from Athy and Tommy
Buggy from Kilkenny were back in town, as was top competition Angler Colm Cash
from Clane. Colm had the family down on Derravaragh and we got a cracking photo
of himself and the kids.
PIKE ON REE....
I was on Ree last week and met Mullingar angler Johnny Corcoran. In the coming
weeks Ree will be well fished and in April the Lough Ree International Pike
Festival will take place. Top prize for the heaviest pike is 3,000 Euro we are
told so a big entry is expected. Naturally we will keep you posted on this super
pike competition. Its a boat angling competition taking place over 3-days
Wednesday 14th – Friday 16th. Johnny was checking out a few Hot Spots and caught
a few good pike including this double that I photographed.
LOVE IS IN THE AIR ON THE LAKES....
It’s the time of year our waterfowl on the lakes and rivers pair off for the
coming breeding season. Last week on Derravaragh many Mallard were in pairs and
checking out suitable nesting sights. While spinning in front of the yellow
River at Coolure I seen a very unusual coloured Mallard Duck with two Drakes
eyeing her up. It was a magical sight and lucky enough I was quick enough to get
a photo of this beautiful coloured Mallard.
GONE FISHING....
That's it folks for another week. Hopefully in next weeks Angling Focus we will
feature a few Midlanders with their first trout of the season on Corrib. Also
news on that prize from Angling Mad Angling centre. With the trout season coming
on line, I will miss some pike action, but we will keep you posted on coming
events and super catches. Once again the phone camera photos are appearing and
it’s great to see your prized catch, but the quality from some camera phones is
not good enough for print.
Tight Lines till next week.

Shannonbridge Fishing Report to February 17th, 2010...
Some heavy showers on Tuesday followed by a bright and sunny Ash
Wednesday. Floods have eased back well but there must be lots of
water still around. Swans were swimming in the floodwater a few days
ago but now the drains are just slightly overfilled. Had a phone
call from a Dublin angler yesterday enquiring if the access road to
the Hot Water Stretch was passable. He is going to try his luck. In
the past week a few pike anglers have been fishing but did not hear
any results.
