dated Wednesday August 25th, 2010

EXCELLENT PIKE ANGLING ON THE FLY FOR CO KILDARE ANGLERS IN THE RIVER SUCK VALLEY

Catch up on the Boyle & District anglers competitions schedule for the next few months. Two parties of six visiting anglers from Co Kildare reported excellent pike fishing in  the River Suck Valley on the fly. German Pike angling guests of angling columnist Mike Murray had some good fishing on the Shannon around Portumna. Last Sunday saw the Athlone Anglers take to Lough Ree for the penultimate Pike competition of the year, the Guinness Cup. While the day was very hot and the winds were calm there was a great turnout with twenty two boats taking part. Ireland's Pikefly competition is an annual Pike fly fishing event and will be fished as usual on Lough Derg and the River Shannon in Killaloe on September 18th. Anglers are invited to contact TJ O'Brien to book a place in the competition - see main report for contact details.  TIGHT LINES!

ATHLONE ANGLERS ASSOCIATION NEWS

MARK AND STEPHEN TAKE HOME GUINNESS CUP .....

Last Sunday saw the Athlone Anglers take to Lough Ree for the penultimate Pike competition of the year, the Guinness Cup. While the day was very hot and the winds were calm there was a great turnout with twenty two boats taking part even though it was not really ideal conditions and this meant that the Captains were not exactly rushed off their feet weighing fish and those they did weigh were relatively small with one exception as the pike caught by Mark Furey and Stephen Conway was the only one to make it into double figures.

The presentation of prizes was held that evening in Potters Bar where new licensee Paddy Martin was an excellent host and we would like to take this opportunity to wish him well in his new venture. As the Captains worked out the winners they very quickly declared that the only double figure pike caught on the day weighing 11lb 11ozs caught by Mark Furey and Stephen Conway the clear winner. Mark and Stephen have been in the prizes a number of times this year and this win now puts them within striking distance of Tony and Declan Doolan in the race for Angler of The Year with only five competitions to go. Second place went to the aforementioned Tony and Declan Doolan for their Pike which weighed 9lb 8ozs and third place went to Thomas Killion whose pike weighed in three ounces lighter at 8lb 5ozs. Conor Hannon took fourth place for his 8lb 12 oz pike and the fifth and final prize went to Helen and Dominic Conway for their 6lb 8oz pike.

Our thanks to Paddy Martin for his hospitality and for the very generous sponsorship of this competition and to Richie Fallon and Conor Hannon who were the Captains of The Day.

THE CONWAY/CONROY CUP ....

The competition for the Conway/Conroy Cup will take place next Sunday 29th August. The start will be from Gallagher’s at 10.30am and will finish with lines up at 6.00pm. This is a catch and release only competition so only fish which are released and swim away will count for the prizes. The presentation of prizes will take place on the Coosan Tavern and Dominic Conway and Thomas Killion will be the Captains of The Day.

FOR YOUR DIARY ....

  • Aug 29th Conway/Conroy Cup, Trout catch and release only;

  • Sept 5th Wykes/Gaffey Memorial Cup, Trout;

  • Sept 12th Keneavy Memorial Cup, Trout;

  • Sept 26th Hatchery Competition, Trout catch and release only;

  • Oct Blacoe Cup, Pike.
