dated Wednesday April 28th, 2010

ANGLING CONDITIONS MUCH IMPROVED FOR PIKE FISHING WITH WARMER TEMPERATURES AND LOWER WATER LEVELS

The Water levels are back to normal for the time of year on the River Suck. Four anglers reported that conditions were ideal for Pike fishing. Bodo Funke reports that the water temperatures in the local lakes and rivers in the Upper Shannon have risen (currently between 9 and 13.5 degrees Celsius) and the pike are beginning to be more active. Spawning is now more or less completed in most waters and the pike are getting hungry. It is now only two and a half weeks to go until this years leg of Predatortour which kicks off on Loug Derg. Anglers turned out in huge numbers to honour the late Stephen Battle in the Stephen Battle Memorial Cup Pike Competition on Lough Derravaragh. Pike of over 20lbs were in the top results, Michael Flanagan reports. We catch up with catches from around Shannonbridge, Dermot Killeen reports    TIGHT LINES!

Predatortour 2010 - Lough Derg, Ireland
It is now only two and a half weeks to go until this years leg of Predatortour kicks off on Loug Derg. I am looking forward to once again participating in this European Open Predator Competition. This year I am joined by well-known Enniskillen pike angler Matt Dean, as we will represent the Irish Angler/ Dennett Outdoor Team there.

SPRING FISHING HOTTING UP!
As the water temperatures in local lakes and rivers rise (currently between 9 and 13.5 degrees Celsius) the pike are beginning to be more active. Spawning is now more or less completed in most waters and the pike are getting hungry. The first flurry of activity saw us catching good numbers of small to medium sized pike, but a few better fish are also starting to show. I am looking forward to keeping you updated here as always, but particularly over the coming weeks, as the month of May usually presents some great pike fishing in Ireland.....

STEPHEN BATTLE MEMORIAL CUP: Anglers turned out in huge numbers to honour the late Stephen Battle. Stephen was a top class coarse angler and featured regularly over the years in angling focus. Carp and pike were some of his favourite fish species, and it was fitting last Sunday on Derravaragh that one of his good angling pals Barry Darby won. Barry had a cracking day along with his good lady Sandra Bardon. The pair boated up on 13 pike including some fine doubles. Their best fish rattled the scales at 20lbs 15oz. Anthony Egan gave Barry a close run and produced a beauty of 20lbs4oz, and Anthony Scally is still keeping in touch on the competition scene and landed a fish of 18lbs 6oz to take 3rd spot.

Many fish were caught and the junior anglers had a ball with Longford lad Jason McDermott taking 1st place with a pike of over 14lbs. Young Alan Orme finished 2nd with a fine pike of 8lbs 5oz and Mickey Moffatt taking 3rd place with 3lbs 5oz.. All junior anglers received a great prize on the day.

In the ladies section Sandra Bardon topped the day with a fine pike of 15lbs. Johnny Corcoran won the mystery prize and it was a beautiful St Croix Rod valued at €300. The presentation took place in the Mullingar Park Hotel, where all anglers and guests were treated to superb light refreshments. Competition organizers Johnny Keating and Barry Darby would like to thanks all who supported the competition, and the Battle family for presenting prizes. A special thanks to John Joe Nevin our Olympic Boxer for taking time out to present the Junior prizes, and weigh masters for the competition Alan Broderick and his son Nick.

INVASIVE SPECIES IN THE NEWS:  Just received news of a Public Forum taking place in Tullamore Court Hotel on April 28th.Its a 6-30 starting time. Invasive species are causing damage to our Lakes, Canals, and Rivers. Experts from the C.F.B. will talk on ways to stop the spread of such species. Here in the Midlands out most common Invasive specie is the Zebra Mussel, which is still very much at large on Derravaragh, and Ree.

PIKE FISHING ON LOUGH DERG THIS SEASON, REPORT DATED APRIL 14th, 2010

April is always a difficult month to fish for pike, mostly because of the water temperature which influences the spawning time.  Do they start early or late this year, and are they yet to be caught with lures?

This winter was very cold, so cold that even some parts of Lough Derg were frozen; I’ve never seen this before! However, we went fishing with the first spring guests, this time from France. For them, fishing on a lake of this size is extraordinary challenging and even more dangerous because of the rocks, especially the ones you can’t see on the surface. Never the less, on the first day, one of the anglers caught his personal best pike, a 97 cm fish of around 18 pounds,  but the following days it was hard work to catch only 3 to 4 pike per day. On the last day the hard work was rewarded with a 102 cm pike of about 22 pounds.

We have been casting a lot using the Jerkbait technique but pike proved very hard to hook. Neither trolling brought us the fish we would have wanted although we weren’t very surprised with a water temperature of 8°c.

The temperature of the water is rising quickly now with this great weather. We can't wait to see the pike starting to feed properly again and to get some action.

Our next report will be in two weeks time, join us then.
