Coarse Angling & Fisheries News Update

Dated Wednesday May 26th, 2010

Photo: Tim Johnson from Leeds with over 100 pounds of mainly hybrids on the Shannon at Rogers Island at Portumna.

CRACKING COARSE FISHING FOR UK PARTY ON THE SHANNON AT ROGERS ISLAND  PORTUMNA

Coarse fish are still spawning at many venues and switching on and off the feed. Paul Waghorn reporting from Lanesboro reported poor fishing on the Shannon around Lanesboro. However, he visited the Inny where  thousands of Roach were spawning and congregating in the shallows around Shrule Bridge. They proved difficult to entice!. One of the highlights of the week was the cracking fishing had by UK party on the Shannon at Rogers Island at Portumna. Also northern Lough Derg fished very well for Roach which are shoaling in huge numbers at a number of locations. The mid Shannon region at Shannonbridge produced good catches of Bream and Tench to 6lbs for UK angler from Halifax. Since the weekend however, winds are swung back around in a northerly direction, lowering air temperatures and this is temporarily hampering angling. Ballinafid Lake is fishing quite well. A visiting angler and regular to the lake had a Carp of 19lbs during an early morning session. Pleasure anglers are also getting good Tench to 3lbs.  TIGHT LINES!

UPPER SHANNON

RIVER SHANNON AT LANESBORO

Paul Waghorn reports each day

Wednesday 19th May:  Another late entry, not because I'm losing interest (that was weeks ago) but because I had a night out on one of the islands on Lough Ramor, Co. Cavan where I duly blanked, thus continuing my run of mis-fortune this year. The daily air temperature was rising significantly as the evening approached. I witnessed a huge may fly hatch on the lough and saw many Trout rising. Earlier in the day I had a number of fish on the navigation channel.

Thursday 20th May:  I arrived back at Lanesborough at 3.30pm just in time to be interviewed by RTE man Ciaran Mullooly with regard to the power station being off-line and the effect on local trade. It is supposed to be transmitted on Monday.

On the river tonight, I was expecting to see a lot of fish as dusk fell, but was rather disappointed at what I saw. I had 16 fish whilst Rory Dunne caught more and bigger to give me a damn good spanking! The fisheries department have been out for the past three days evaluating the river. I saw some of the graphics on their laptop and was very impressed. The water temperature is 62f . All their findings are readily available for viewing at www.wfdfish.ie but the published reports are always a year behind.

Friday 21st May:  From early on, today was destined to be extremely warm. very few visitors during the daytime but two were on the navigation channel. Unfortunately, they left before I could find out what was caught. In the evening, I wasted two hours at "Maladys" for a Trout of 4oz with 2 Perch and a 1oz Roach. Back at Lanesborough, two lads were on the disabled swims but were blanking when I left them at 11.30pm. Below them, John Fryer from Gosport had a Bream of 3lb 2oz whilst his two fishing partners had little success. Over on the navigation channel there were a multitude of "anglers" using beach casters with jingle bells as bite indicators.

Saturday 22nd May: The overnight anglers had all packed up by the time I had a walk along the river at 08.30. There was no one out at all. I suppose one good thing that has come from the power station being off is the fish. Being confined to the shop meant I was unable to see if anyone was catching, but as it was unbelievably hot this morning, I'm sure any fish would have been reluctant to feed anyway. I had a call late afternoon from Peter Wood, informing me of thousands of Roach under the bridge at Shrule. I had to have a look for myself, so shut the shop at six and drove to see the phenomena for myself. It was quite unbelievable. I saw many Roach well over 2lbs with some probably close to 3lbs. Some anglers had tried with little success to tempt them into feeding. I had to have a go but also found it very frustrating seeing so many fish unwilling to take my bait. I fished until 10pm with only 9 Roach , 2 Perch and a Trout. The best Roach went 1lb 13oz with others of 1lb 11.5oz, 1lb 8oz and three others over a pound. Peter on the other bank caught as well.

Sunday 23rd May: Another hot day resulted in a lot of casual anglers catching very little. Roach still on the spawning area around Shrule Bridge but very reluctant to feed as the Gosport 3 found out. John Fryer actually blanked! Having fished a morning session without a bite on a lake, this was quite disappointing. Imagine how he must have felt when we all went out on the mud island for the evening and didn't have a bite between us?

Monday 24th May: That's it, - This ends these reports as Paul returns home to England.

Angling guests of Melview Lodge Barry Baker and friend Pete from London had some good fish on pre-baited swims, despite the difficult angling conditions with very bright weather. They managed to produce some fine Bream to 5lbs and a few good Tench to 4lb 8oz.

Fishing in and around Longford area has had mixed results with some days better than others, this is due to the bright conditions. However things are due to change with improved conditions expected, tune in next week when we report on some pre-baited swims being fished at present.

Brian Bohan   CHAFLYNNS COTTAGE & GUIDING SERVICE  MOHILL reports on angling in the upper Shannon region around MOHILL and CARRICK ON SHANNON

The Dutch King of Clubs was fished last week from Monday to Thursday May 17th to 20th. It was based at Carrick on Shannon and was fished at four venues, two on the Shannon and two in the northern fisheries region. Shannon Regional Fisheries Board staff were on hand and supported the event throughout the week. The event was a great success with some very good weights. Top weight for the week was overall winner Pest te Martin with 22kg on Rynn on day three. Rynn proved again to be one of the best fisheries in the area with plenty of hybrids and Bream to 5lbs.

The ShRFB reports for Ray Duthie Old Forge Banagher, Bait Stockist, Tackle and ACCOMMODATION PROVIDER  Tel: 057 9151504.  BANAGHER area this week.

Fishing was good prior to the change in weather. Bright sunshine at the weekend followed by much cooler northerly winds has hampered coarse angling since.

REPORT FROM TIM JOHNSON AND HIS PARTY  WHILE FISHING ON THE RIVER SHANNON AT ROGERS ISLAND PORTUMNA

Tony Dowling from Blackburn and Tim Johnson from Bradford fished Rogers Island on the Town stretch of the River Shannon at Portumna from Sunday 16th May to Friday 21st May. Alan and Amy Smith from Doncaster were staying at the same guest house and joined us on Rogers Island for what was a great weeks fishing.

The weather was mainly warm and sometimes sunny with light or no breeze, which allowed us to fish Pole to hand all week. Occasional switches to the feeder when the pole went quiet kept the fish coming and gave the shoulders and arms a rest. Fishing ten or eleven metres to hand all day is hard work but very enjoyable.

Photo: Tony with his best bag of the week. Over 80 pounds of Roach and Hybrids.

Red maggot was the best bait, but sweet corn and worm cocktails also produced. Tony and I caught in the 6 days over 800 pounds of big hybrids to four pounds and Roach averaging a pound but up to 2.5 pounds with best individual weights of 117 pounds and 85 pounds. Average daily catches were over 60 pounds each – Brilliant fishing by any standards.

Photo: Alan with his first pole to hand caught net of fish. Mainly Roach with an odd hybrid. Quote from Alan “ The hybrids pull your string a bit on the pole”

Amy and Alan caught Roach and hybrids all week and Alan enjoyed his first try at pole to hand fishing. Amy enjoyed catching the big hybrids on the feeder and fishing a waggler up in the water to catch the Roach.

Photo: Amy with a 3 pound hybrid caught on the feeder.

Special thanks to Mary at Oak Lodge Guest House in Portumna for great accommodation, great breakfasts, Guinness waiting for us after long hot days on the bank and general cracking hospitality.

This is for Ron Dowling (Tony’s dad) who couldn’t travel over this year.

Mike Murray , MURRAY'S B&B, Derryhiney, reports on the fishing around  PORTUMNA

The Sheebeen, Salmon Run and Fairyhill Stretches are still not fishing their best with fairly poor catches this week to anglers using feeder method. The better results are from long pole tactics for Roach up to 2lbs. Northern Lough Derg however is fishing extremely well with huge shoals of Roach and Perch congregating at various locations, providing excellent sport. On Sunday despite the hot weather I had a bag of 60lbs of good size Roach and Perch. Bream and hybrids to 6lbs are also showing in numbers but only from sunset onwards.
