Photo: No this is not Iceland or Canada, it's
Ireland during the recent big freeze, a rare scene, not seen in
Ireland in many decades. This angler decided to go ice fishing on
Ballinafid Lake, Mullingar during the freeze up which saw air
temperatures drop to -12C.
NB: In the interest of your own safety, we do
not recommend that you go fishing on a frozen lake or river at
any time - thank you.
LITTLE OR NO COARSE FISHING DUE TO ICE AND SNOW
AND FROZEN LAKES
After what seems a life time of frost, snow, ice and very low temperatures
things seem to be getting back to normal as we write with milder temperatures
and a big thaw. However, some lakes are still frozen but are starting to thaw
out now. On the down side many rivers up the catchment are flooded due to lots
of snow melt water entering the system. Coarse fishing is virtually at a
standstill due to the harsh conditions of the past number of weeks, since before
Christmas. Conditions should improve gradually. Join us in two weeks time
for our next update.
UPPER SHANNON

REPORT FROM LANESBORO
Fishing was very hard at Lanesborough with water temperature
only just recovering from the cold snap. The Hot Water
Stretch seems devoid of fish but a few very small 2oz fish
may be found in the harbour where the water appears warmer.

CARRICK ON SHANNON
After what seems a life time of frost, snow, ice and
very low temperatures things seem to be getting back to normal.
Lakes are still frozen but are starting to thaw out but will take
another few days to be completely ice free. The rivers were about
the only places that were fishable. I spent most of the freeze on
the Shannon which was hard going at times with bits being hard come
by.

River, Lough Loung, Stoneham's and other local lakes are in flood
and out of order for fishing, water levels are above the fishing
stands on the lakes. Levels should gradually settle over the coming
