BREAM FEATURING WELL IN CATCHES ONCE AGAIN THIS WEEK
Weather has a more autumnal feel
of late with cooler daytime temperatures and has been quite blustery over the
past few days.
The Carrick-on-Shannon Angling Festival celebrates its 30th birthday
in September and the four-day event is attracting a new batch of overseas match
fishermen who hope to win the guaranteed €1,000 first prize. See main report for
details.
There were good reports again this week with angling guests of Melview lodge from Co Wicklow doing well on pre-baited swims in the Upper Shannon.
A party of three anglers had great Bream
action, night fishing on the Meadows on the Shannon in Athlone. Bream are also
showing in much better abundance than last year on the Shannon at Portumna and
Banagher. TIGHT LINES!
RIVER SHANNON, LANESBOROUGH
Coarse anglers are thin
on the ground on the Shannon in the Lanesboro area, very few
reports.

The Carrick-on-Shannon Angling Festival
celebrates its 30th birthday in September and the four-day event
is attracting a new batch of overseas match fishermen who hope
to win the guaranteed €1,000 first prize.
But money isn’t everything. The appeal for the new
anglers seems to be the fact there is no pressure to pay anything
more than the €80 entry fee and the majority of anglers don’t even
bother with the optional sweepstake.
And on top of that, local fishing tackle dealer Terry Mann of
Shannon Tackle Jamestown, throws €500 into the prize fund for the
biggest fish caught on the last day!
“It works well”, explained the Terry, who moved from
London 23 years ago to live and work on the banks of the River
Shannon. “The main festival is decided on points and introducing a
decent-size last day prize keeps everyone focused on the Friday
match”
Not only that, but there are valuable daily tackle
prizes for the biggest fish and reduced bait prices to encourage
more people to take part.
The Carrick-on-Shannon Festival takes place on three
local lakes and the River Shannon Mudflats between September 20-24
and the person to contact for more information is Charlotte
Fearon on 00353 71 9620313
It has to be said that there is a guaranteed €5,000
prize fund and across its 30 year history, more money has been paid
out than ever is received in entry fees.

STROKESTOWN LAKES AND RIVER SHANNON, CO
LONGFORD AREA
Photo:
Alan, Bob and Callum Moss with quality Hybrids, Roach, Rudd
and Perch.
There has been some great coarse fishing in the area this week on pre-baited swims using
mainly
feeder tactics, Bream to 5lbs, Hybrids to 2lb
9oz, Roach 1lb + . Some big Rudd and Perch have featured in most
catches falling for various bait combinations on the hook. At the
time of writing the weather seems a little unsettled. Logon next week to read more reports and see
more pictures of how the other groups at Melview are doing.

Bream.
Angling guests of Melview Lodge Alan Moss and son
Callum
from Wicklow visited the upper Shannon for a fishing trip, joining
them for the holiday was Alan's brother Bob from south London. They
put together some great weights along with some quality fish,
Hybrids to 2lb 9oz, Roach 1lb+ and some good Rudd and Perch.
Pre-baiting paid off for them. They produced some fine catches
of Bream to 5lbs. Young Callum showed that age did not matter putting together some fine weights during the week. Kevin commented
that all three lads caught well all week despite putting up with
high winds and heavy rain at times. All fish were released back to the water
unharmed.
