FISHING IMPROVING IN THE DUTCH KING OF CLUBS
COMPETITION AFTER A SLOW START
Coarse fishing has been hampered by the cold northerly winds for much of the
week. Thankfully the winds have swung around to to the south bringing up much
warmer air in recent days. This should have a very positive effect on the
fishing heading into the weekend. The Dutch King of Clubs has kicked off and we
provide an update each day now, see main report. On Monday fishing was slow due
to the cold winds, but fishing has significantly improved on Day 2 and 3. We
wish all participants the best of luck. Ccoarse angling has been very mixed
elsewhere. The Shannon at Lanesborough continues to disappoint. Paul Waghorn who
has been reporting from Lanesborough, headed off to try the River Inny on Monday
last and had a great evening session. There were some decent catches at our
access for all facility at Donamon on the River Suck, while other venues were
patchy.
In the mid Shannon fishing was hampered by cold northerly winds.
However, reasonably good fishing was reported at times. Anglers had a good
Tench catch during a night session on the Hot Water stretch at Shannonbridge.
The open day of Fisheries Awareness Week at Donamon kicks off on Saturday May
22nd. Coarse and pike fishing tuition, including casting instruction will be
provided free of charge. Other events during Fisheries awareness week will take
place around the region and countrywide so logon to
http://www.faw.ie for a guide to the local events. Prospects
look good for the next few days as air temperatures are forecast to climb into
the 20's C over the weekend.
TIGHT LINES!
UPPER SHANNON

RIVER SHANNON AT LANESBORO
Paul Waghorn reports each day
Saturday 15th May: A few showers may have helped today,
but alas there were no anglers for any length of time. In
general, the temperature was higher than in the last two
weeks. Perhaps I need a miracle to get some action on the
navigation channel? The showers became heavier in the early
evening, so I resisted the temptation to fish. With barely a
week before I return home, this spring is without doubt the
worst experience I have had in nineteen years of visiting
Ireland.
Sunday 16th May: Lanesborough was devoid of serious
anglers again, so no news is bad news! I didn't take my
evening session seriously either, but I did catch! - 6
Roach, all sub 1/2oz and 6 Perch of 1-2oz. Peter Wood fished
just above me for two fish which were bigger than my 12.
Monday May 17th: There must be something about
Mondays which makes me oversleep. It was nearly 10am before
I rose and I wasn't too keen on fishing. Eventually, I
trotted over the bridge and caught more tiny Roach and Perch
on the slipway. I could only find enthusiasm lasting an hour
so a drive to Red Bridge on the Inny was taken at 4pm. I
hadn't fished this section for two years but walked upstream
of the bridge to the cattle drink where there is about 8-9
foot of water. I'd like to say I bagged up but in all
honesty, I had 19 fish in an hour most of which were around
the 2oz mark. They were a mixture of Roach, Perch and
Hybrids. At 7pm I was walking down the field at "Maladys"
and had a wonderful evening session. A Roach of around 1lb
2oz was the first of three "netters" at 7.15 but at 7.50 I
achieved a lifetimes ambition. We had to check the scales
twice but it went 2lbs exactly. I think it was August 1976
when I caught a 1lb 6oz fish on the Teise at Bayham Abbey so
it has taken 34 years to get through the next barrier. I
don't think I'd be telling lies if I said I have had
possibly 600 Roach over a pound in-between. I carried
catching until 9.30. A photo will soon be on Peters Inny
Page as I forgot my camera tonight. Luckily, Peter was on
hand to catch the moment.
Tuesday 18th May: The south westerly winds were
playing havoc with my stick float presentation. I caught
some good Roach up to 12ozs or so before the waves just got
too much. The rain came for most of the rest of the day so I
had an afternoon of nothing. God only knows why I went out
again tonight? For my persistence, I was rewarded with a
12oz Hybrid and 5 Perch.

BANAGHER area this
week.
The wind has been hampering angling at times on the Shannon. During suitable
periods, fishing has been reasonably good. Meelick is producing quality Roach and skimmers. The Grand Canal at Rahan is fishing reasonably well. There are
an abundance of skimmers and lots of small Roach and hybrids showing here.
Mike Murray ,
MURRAY'S B&B, Derryhiney, reports on the fishing
around
PORTUMNA
There are very few visiting anglers around in the
area and fishing has been quiet consequently. Warmer weather for the
weekend should get more anglers out and improve angling prospects.
ShRFB reports for the
RIVER SUCK VALLEY - Mid River Suck
Three were two good coarse fishing reports from Donamon on the River
Suck. Paul Mc
Loughlin from the Whitehouse Hotel, Ballinlough had 25lbs, mainly
good Roach and some hybrids. Keen angler Rory Dunne from Roscommon
had 22lbs of Roach and hybrids at Donamon in a 1.5 hour session on
the same venue. Elsewhere coarse fishing has been poor enough.
Anglers reported averaging 10lbs to 15lbs at Ballyforan and
Ballinasloe areas.
