CONOR AND SEAN WIN OLDEST CUP ...
The club always has at least one competition for pike before the
madness of the mayfly season so last Sunday eighteen boats headed
out onto Lough Ree in search of our big green friends in an effort
to win the Poyntonia Cup which is the oldest competition in the
club having first been fished for back in 1937 when the club was
founded. The day itself was universally described as “dirty” with
cold winds and miserable drizzly rain making for uncomfortable
conditions but both captains were kept busy particularly Liam
O’Sullivan who was called upon to rescue a boat which had drifted
away after its occupants broke rule number one and failed to
secure it properly after alighting on the shoreline.
The presentation of prizes took place that evening in McNeill’s
Bar where Arlene was as usual our very elegant and generous
hostess and where, after all the totting up had been completed,
Conor Hannon and Sean Kelly were declared the new keepers of the
Poyntonia Cup when their pike of 18lb 13ozs topped the leader
board. In second place were Helen and Dominic Conway with a pike
weighing 16lb 1oz, this was Helen’s first outing this year and
with the dapping season upon us and this fine catch under her belt
I am sure we will see a lot more of her over the coming weeks. In
third place with a pike weighing12lb 11ozs were Tony Doolan and
Gerard Lynch, Tony had been absent from the leader boards since
the first day of the season but it seems he has found his bait box
and is back on form again. Philip Keogh and son in law Keith
Dowling claimed fourth place for their 11lb 1oz pike and the fifth
and final spot went to captain of the day Liam O’Sullivan and his
son Richard for their 10lb pike.
We would like to thank Arlene McNeill for her extremely generous
sponsorship of this competition and for the excellent hospitality
on the night at the presentation of prizes. Thanks also to Thomas
Killion and Liam O’Sullivan who were the captains of the day.
