Friar's Lough is an isolated lake of about 12 acres in area and lies to the east of Portumna near the village of Lorrha in Co Tipperary. It is a lovely lake and rich in natural feed. As a rich lake it is likely to have a good stock of most coarse fish. It is rarely fished due to poor facilities and hence very little is known about it's potential to produce coarse fish. It was once renowned for it's good sized bream to about 5lbs and rudd to 1.5lbs. Pre-baiting would be recommended for best results. The best time to fish this lake is early morning during the summer months. If shore facilities were developed it could have a lot of potential as a coarse fishery. It is possible to get good bags employing the correct tactics but equally you could draw a blank at this venue, reflecting the limited feedback we receive. Nonetheless, it is worth exploring and experimenting. A boat equipped with a fish finder would offer a distinct advantage in locating the shoals of fish. If an angler decides to fish this lake, it is essential to pre-bait and fish it for a few days at a time, patience is of the essence! Because of the lack of up to date information we will not attempt to rate fishing here.

FACILITIES AND ACCESS

Access is down a country lane, and through a field and some swampy ground into Friar's Lough. Permission should be sought locally to fish the lake from the local land owner.

TO GET THERE

From Portumna take the Nenagh road in the direction of Carrigahorig village. Before you come to the village take a left turn along a small country road in the direction of Lorrha village about 5 kms away. Before the village of Lorrha you will come to an old Abbey on your left, take the next left and follow the track into the lake.
