At O'Briensbridge there are two established fishing
locations on this section of the River Shannon. The other section is downstream of the
Bridge. There are 35 natural swims on this section which are well maintained and
can also offer fishable water all year round for all species of coarse fish.
Both these sections are suitable for competitions. The downstream section is a
popular location for pike angling and well worth a few hours fishing. It can
produce Pike to Specimen size.
UPPER SECTION
The first section is
upstream of O'Briensbridge as far
as the E.S.B. (Electricity Supply Board) Dam, a distance of about 1.5 kms. The water here is
between 6 and 8 meters deep and has a strong current close to the dam
but in slow flowing further downstream. This section has about 30 well
maintained swims. Species here are Roach, hybrids, Perch and Bream.
The banks are high but fishable all year round.
LOWER SECTION
This venue is situated down
river from the village and is used as a match venue for the local
clubs. There are approximately 35 natural swims. Species here are the
same as up river. The water is slow flowing with depths ranging
between 3 and 8 meters.
FACILITIES AND ACCESS
There is a roadway between the canal and the River
Shannon which provides access to the upper section. This is owned by the ESB and
requires a key to open the gate to the section. This can be obtained - enquire
locally. Otherwise access involves a long walk along the left
bank facing upstream. Parking is available near the bridge.
Access to the downstream section is sign posted at the end of the
village near the canal bridge. On reaching the river bank
underneath the ESB wires the swims are located upstream and
downstream of this position.
TO GET THERE
From Limerick - take the
main Dublin N7 out of the City for about 10 kms to Daly's Cross,
turn left here and continue on the minor road to Montpelier and
across into O'Briensbridge. Seek directions if you are unsure.
There is another route which can be considered from the opposite
side of the river, you can make local enquiries or follow your road map.
