THE FISHERY

The River Shannon and Lough Derg's southern shores offer exceptional bream and hybrid fishing, mainly on remote shores of the lake. When fishing these shores always check the weather forecast as Lough Derg is a very large body of water and can be a dangerous place in bad weather, also the shore line can be very rocky in places, so in the interest of your own safety and comfort come suitably prepared with levelling platform and other appropriate gear. Best time to fish is June, July and into August, weather permitting.

Further local advice, boat hire and angling services please contact TJ's Angling Centre, see right hand column for his listing.

Killaloe is a prime base for the Pike angler interested in fishing Lough Derg and the lower River Shannon. Good Pike fishing is often reported upriver of Killaloe on Lough Derg and downriver on the River Shannon to the E.S.B. (Electricity Supply Board) Dam, where fish up to 20lbs plus are encountered. Trolling spoons and plugs, trolling dead bait or dead-baiting from a drifting boat are the best methods to employ - vary your tactics. During spring time concentrate around the shore margins. This is the venue for the very popular European Pike Angling Challenge held every year in September and the growing International Pike fly Competition.

FACILITIES AND ACCESS:

Access to remote shores is limited by boat with an odd exception where private land access is gained by special permission or arrangement. Support and advice is readily available at TJ's Angling Centre Killaloe. See his advert link on the right hand column.
