WHERE TO FISH
As areas of the Parklands came out of commercial peat
production a number of still water fishing lakes were developed as both local
and tourist amenities. The work was carried out by Bord na Mona in conjunction
with the Lough Boora Parklands group with advice provided by the Central and
Shannon Regional Fisheries Boards. Development work began in 1994 and four
freshwater fisheries were created.
The lakes were created by excavating the remaining peat
and deepening the proposed lake bottom. The banks were reinforced and
landscaping work carried out to provide shelter. Access roads, parking and
picnic facilities were then developed. When the lakes were flooded, aquatic
plants were introduced from waterways nearby and the lakes were stocked with a
variety of game and coarse fish. Since development, each lake has undergone
rapid naturalisation.
The R357 is a link road between the N62
(Birr to Ferbane) and the N52 (Kilcormac to Tullamore) road. All lakes in the
Parklands can be accessed off these roads. The Lough Boora Project group feature a very informative website where you will get
additional information on the Parklands Project, maps and directions to fishing
venues etc

LOCAL FISHING GUIDE
The Shannon Regional Fisheries Board has undertaken
extensive research over recent years to bring you these guides. We endeavour to
rate angling according to importance of the target angling
species present, facilities and access on a fishery by fishery basis.
While we use certain fisheries and angling criteria to assess each fishery, the
rating system only purports to be a guideline designed to assist anglers
planning a fishing trip to the area and is under constant review.
