SEVERE NIGHT FROSTS AND BITTER COLD CONTINUES TO HAMPER COARSE FISHING

Water levels on the Shannon are now almost at summer level after a prolonged dry spell of very cold and frosty weather. We have very few coarse angling reports in as yet. Water temperature is struggling to get to 3C and many of the backwaters in the mid Shannon around Banagher were reported as frozen over, due to the severe night frosts.  We'll have to wait for milder weather!!.    TIGHT LINES!

RIVER SUCK PRODUCES A WHOPPING PIKE OF OVER 32lbs

It's been an action packed week with lots of Pike angling reports received and a number of personal bests recorded. Water levels have rapidly receded since our last update and back to near summer level on the Shannon as we write, so no problem with floods!. Brian Bohan and his friends had some lively Pike fishing in the Upper Shannon region, with a personal best fish of 15lbs recorded by one of his angling guest.  A party of Belgian anglers, guests of Melview Lodge had a good week landing over 60 pike between them in the Upper Shannon. It was a special day for regular contributor to our angling column, Richie Dunne who landed a whopping Pike on the river Suck near Ballinasloe. The fish tipped the scales at 31lbs 8ozs and is our feature fish and catch of the week this week. This is Richie's personal best fish - well done. Heading south, Peter Gleeson has recently commenced a new Angling Column in the Nenagh Guardian newspaper, entitled HOOKED ON FISH.  Peter will feature a regular column on the lower Shannon in our angling notes over the coming season. This week, he reports on last Sunday's pike competition run by the Ballina-Killaloe Anglers and St. Flannan's Fishing Club.  Catch up on these and other stories from around the region. Do wrap up as it remains very cold with severe night frosts.   TIGHT LINES!
