Coarse Angling Report - Shannon River Basin District

Dated Wednesday September 1st, 2010

ANGLERS ENJOY GOOD COARSE FISHING AT A NUMBER OF VENUES

The Carrick-on-Shannon Angling Festival celebrates its 30th birthday this year and the four-day event is attracting a new batch of overseas match fishermen who hope to win the guaranteed €1,000 first prize. Belgian angling guests of Melview lodge did well on pre-baited swims at select venues in the upper Shannon region, bagging quality Bream, Tench and other mixed coarse fish. The change in the weather over recent days with cold evenings and bright sunny days has affected catch rates though. Anglers are reporting excellent Perch fishing trolling on Lough Ree, with big Perch showing. Dermot Killeen reports some good catches on the mid Shannon around Shannonbridge, Lower River Suck and the Grand Canal, good Bream catches and lots of big Perch showing also in the catches. The reports from Banagher are similar - big explosions of Perch. A Co Clare angler reported very good fishing on Doon Lake Co Clare. Angling conditions remain good with the cooler night temperatures to be replaced by milder conditions over the coming days. Water levels are generally at low summer level and very clear but rain is forecast for the weekend.  TIGHT LINES!

RIVER SHANNON, LANESBOROUGH

Coarse anglers are thin on the ground on the Shannon in the Lanesborough area, very few reports.

CARRICK ON SHANNON FESTIVAL

Photo: The Carrick-on-Shannon Festival takes place on three local lakes and the River Shannon Mudflats between September 20-24

The Carrick-on-Shannon Angling Festival celebrates its 30th birthday in September and the four-day event is attracting a new batch of overseas match fishermen who hope to win the guaranteed €1,000 first prize.

But money isn’t everything.  The appeal for the new anglers seems to be the fact there is no pressure to pay anything more than the €80 entry fee and the majority of anglers don’t even bother with the optional sweepstake.
And on top of that, local fishing tackle dealer Terry Mann of Shannon Tackle Jamestown, throws €500 into the prize fund for the biggest fish caught on the last day!

“It works well”, explained Terry, who moved from London 23 years ago to live and work on the banks of the River Shannon.  “The main festival is decided on points and introducing a decent-size last day prize keeps everyone focused on the Friday match”

Not only that, but there are valuable daily tackle prizes for the biggest fish and reduced bait prices to encourage more people to take part.

The Carrick-on-Shannon Festival takes place on three local lakes and the River Shannon Mudflats between September 20-24 and the person to contact for more information is Charlotte Fearon on 00353 71 9620313

It has to be said that there is a guaranteed €5,000 prize fund and across its 30 year history, more money has been paid out than ever is received in entry fees.

STROKESTOWN LAKES AND RIVER SHANNON, CO LONGFORD AREA

Coarse angling has been good in the area with Bream being the predominant species featuring in the catches, also some good Tench, Hybrids, Roach, Rudd and big Perch. In recent days catch rates are down due to a change in the weather, warm bright days, cold evenings and early mornings.

Jean-Pierre and son Nick along with Jose and Pierre are no strangers to Ireland as they come to Melview Lodge two or three times a year. Swims were pre-baited and the catches got better each day. Bream, Hybrids, Roach and Perch were the main species with a nice big Tench on the last day for Pierre.

The Shannon has dropped to a low level with very little pace on the river as we write. Coarse fishing has been steady by all accounts. There are huge explosions of Perch, fish to 1.5lbs with the odd fish caught to 3lbs. There are also huge abundance of small rudd and roach evident. Anglers seem happy with the fishing.
