Ballymahon is located in the midland's of
Ireland and lies about 110kms
to the west from Dublin airport. It is situated on
the lower River Inny Catchment, an important coarse angling system. The River Inny
flows out of Lough Sheelin on the borders of Cavan and Westmeath and follows a south westerly route
through Ballymahon to enter Lough Ree 5 miles (8 km) downstream.
WHERE TO FISH
There are a
number of stretches along its course which are renowned for coarse angling. The
section of river described on this guide extends from Ballynacarrow bridge upstream of Ballymahon,
downstream to the Inny mouth at Lough Ree. This guide identifies, describes and
rates each fishing location in some detail.
In association with the Central Fisheries Board, the Shannon
Regional Fisheries Board conducted a major stock assessment survey of the River Inny in 2008
from Lough Derravaragh to Lough Ree. Chub a new species of freshwater coarse fish were located at
one location by the Shannon
Regional Fisheries. The survey has also shown some excellent
stocks of Pike, Bream and Hybrids in sections south of Ballymahon
and trout recorded up to 8lbs.
