THE FISHERY

Houlihan's Hole as it's known is located on the River Inny at the bottom of a fast flowing stretch situated downstream of Ballymahon and the meat factory. It has a good roach population. From April to about mid June, good shoals of large bream often congregate here. During low water they tend to move from deeper water into the flow and can be caught in the shallower stretch upstream of the deep pool area. This type of fishing will test an anglers skill but can be a very enjoyable angling experience, catching quite large fish in fast flowing water is exciting. Fishing can be excellent here if a shoal of bream are encountered and we often receive reports of good catches.

FACILITIES AND ACCESS

Access could only be described as difficult. It requires a walk down a field below the meat factory to the rivers edge and so is only advised for the more energetic angler. Fishing is off the river bank. Permission should be sought from the landowner or check with your accommodation provider regarding access here.

TO GET THERE

From Ballymahon take the Athlone road for about three quarters of a mile. Park your car in the layby near a new bungalow beyond the  meat factory.
