THE FISHERY

This stretch is located upstream of Ballymahon and downstream of Lough Iron. The left hand bank facing upstream  has been developed by the Legan Anglers. Bridges of  timber and steel construction have been provided over drains for the convenience of anglers, which opens up a five mile stretch of river.  Pike of over twenty pounds are recorded here every year, hence there is an abundance of fodder fish 'roach' along the section. Anglers who are interested in roach fishing should find this stretch to their satisfaction. River depths are varied running from shallow sections to deeper stretches.

FACILITIES AND ACCESS

General access is at the road bridge.

TO GET THERE

From Ballymahon take the Mullingar road out of the town and proceed to Abbeyshrule village. Continue through Abbeyshrule village. Cross the Canal, continue straight on to a T junction. Turn right here into Ratharney. Turn right again in the direction of Mullingar. After about two miles you will meet the river. The right hand bank downstream is the easiest bank and a good location for the roving pike angler.  The river on the left hand  bank upstream is the section developed by the Legan Inny Anglers.
